Mathematics! starring… Mr. Lafrance and the Grade 4 & 5’s!
Welcome to Grade 4 & 5 Math!
We are about to embark on a wonderful adventure together through the land of numbers, problem solving, critical thinking, and of course fun! As many of you may already be aware, starting at the grade 4 level the delivery of Mathematics at French Immersion schools is in the English language. As concepts become more complex in nature, your son/daughter will be able to master these skills in their first language.
About the Program
The study of mathematics equips students with knowledge, skills,
and habits of the mind that are essential for successful and rewarding participation in our society. Learning mathematics results in more than a mastery of basic skills, it equips students with a concise and powerful means of communication. Mathematical structures, operations, processes, and language provide students with a framework and tools for reasoning, justifying conclusions, and expressing ideas clearly. The mathematics program is delivered through the five major strands: Number Sense & Numeration, Data Management & Probability, Geometry & Spatial Sense, Patterning & Algebra, and Measurement. We will touch on a minimum of four strands per term. Most of the skill development within the classroom will not focus on one at a time, rather, how we can use the skills mastered in each strand together in our daily lives.
Textbook:
Math Makes Sense 5 by Addison Wesley. If your son or daughter takes a textbook home, it is of the utmost importance that this is returned in a timely matter. The textbooks are shared amongst all of the grade 5 students so your cooperation and understanding on this matter is appreciated. Textbooks are very expensive to replace, please return in good condition.
Questionnaire
Attached is a questionnaire (.doc) / questionnaire (.pdf) that should be filled out as soon as possible with your son or daughter. This form is important as it gives me necessary contact information, as well to provide some insight into your child’s interests and needs to me. With this information, I will be able to better establish lines of contact with you and deliver the best possible math experience to your child.
Website
In order to minimize the waste of paper, throughout the year I will update my website with important information regarding announcements,
assignments, resources, updates, and more. This newsletter as well as other information can be found on the website: www.mr-lafrance.weebly.com
Contact
Throughout the year, I encourage you to contact me with any questions or concerns regarding your child. I can be reached via email at
[email protected]. I will do my best to respond as soon as possible.
I am very much looking forward to spending the year with your child and being part of mastering the art of mathematics together!
Sincerely,
Nicholas Lafrance
